Love & Gelato is Netflix’s latest book-to-film teen rom-com adaptation and considering the success the streaming service has seen from the To All the Boys trilogy and series like Heartstopper, this is definitely not a genre they are going to shy away from any time soon.
Love & Gelato is based on the first book in the Love & Gelato trilogy by Jenna Evans Welch. The book first came out in 2016 and quickly became a New York Times bestseller. With that much hype, it was only a matter of time before Netflix or another studio grabbed up the film rights to this one.
The film started production in Florence, Italy in 2021 with Brandon Camp as both director and writer. He is most well known as the director of Benji and Love Happens, a romance starring Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart.
The cast includes Susanna Skaggs, Killing Eve‘s Owen McDonnell, Tall Girl, Moxie, and Stargirl‘s Anjelika Washington, Alex Boniello, Valentina Lodovini, and Marie-France Arcilla.
Love & Gelato follows Lina Emerson, a young woman who is headed to college in the fall but first must deal with the fact that her mother is dying. But before she passes, her mother has only one wish for her daughter: she wants her to go to Rome to get to know her father.
Lina would rather stay at home. Her father hasn’t wanted anything to do with her for most of her life. Why should she go see him now? But once she’s given the journal her mother wrote when she spent time in Italy, she decides to go and is determined to at least try to have a good time.
Little does she know that while in the city, she will find love, art, gelato (the best part), Italian grandmothers, and mysteries about her mother, her father, and even herself.

Since this is only the first book in the series, it will be interesting to see if Netflix has plans to make the Love & Luck and Love & Olives into movies as well.
Love & Gelato will be available to stream on Netflix on Wednesday, June 22, 2022.
